PureMVC Cairngorm WebOrb

I met Jens at this years 360|Flex Europe event in Milan;

Some time ago I had taken Alex Uhlmann‘s ‘Cairngorm Login‘ example and used it as the basis for my ‘Cairngorm For Beginners’ series of tutorials.

Jens then took the end product (which was simply an updated version of the original) and used it to write his own tutorial demonstrating how to get the login example running with [ the PHP version of ] WebOrb (an open source technology for Flex-PHP Remoting)

Then he took it one step further and used that to write another tutorial showing how to convert the php login example from Cairngorm to pureMVC.

Well, I’ve been meaning to get around to learning both remoting and pureMVC, and as I’m familiar with the login example this is a great place to start. I took a look at the first of the two tutorials this evening and it served as a good intro to WebOrb/remoting. Tomorrow I’ll follow on with the pureMVC example. Thanks Jens, thanks Alex.

I love the way the web works.

I’ll look forward to that, I like your tutorials.
I got started in cairngorm with your blog and have been meaning to do something in pureMVC as well, so I’m sure it will be of interest.
    tia! Jim.

PureMVC is just great, I really like working with it. Honestly, the documentation is the best place to start with it – it is some of the best I’ve seen on an open-source project.

Hi t, yes I was very impressed by the documentation I saw last night :) I’ve just got to get that first example under my belt to solidify it all. I’m looking forward to it.

Cairngorm really does suffer in that respect. I attended an interesting Cairngorm session at Scotch On The Rocks this year. It was given by Borre from the team, who by the way is a really decent guy. He was aware of how people feel about certain aspects of the framework such as ModelLocator, and he explained how the problem is not so much in the pattern – which shows intent – but in the way it has been [mis]used (actually it was interesting to find out that they intended it to be used as I described in this post http://nwebb.co.uk/blog/?p=168).

It also transpired that some of the demos floating around were misleading and not using the framework as intended. He wasn’t using this as an excuse. He was aware that these problems were not the fault of the developer but rather down to the lack of decent official documentation – the team are apparently working on some better docs right now.

Still, it is reassuring to see how Cliff has approached it from the start, and it really does endear me to the framework. It will be great to get familiar with it and assess the pros and cons of each.

    Cheers,
    Neil

    Hey,
Can’t help you too much with any remoting examples, but I’ve got a set of simple-to-intermediate PureMVC tutorials over on my blog if you’re interested in them.

    http://9mmedia.com/blog/?tag=puremvc

Hope they help! I can answer any questions if have any also… If not, Cliff’s documentation and the forums on the site are full of really great help.
